Garage door insulation and heat loss: what actually matters

Heat loss through a garage door is easy to underestimate because the door is a small fraction of a house, yet it is often the single worst-performing surface in the building. A thin steel sheet with no thermal break loses heat far faster than the surrounding cavity wall, and on an attached garage that difference is felt through the connecting wall as well as inside the garage itself.

This guide sets out how U-values work, what single-skin and double-skin construction actually mean, and the practical steps that help whether or not you are ready to replace the door.

What a U-value tells you

A U-value measures how much heat passes through a square metre of material for every degree of temperature difference either side. Lower is better. A single-skin steel door with no insulating core sits far above the figures you would accept for a wall or roof, which is why an attached garage with an old up-and-over door often feels colder than the rest of the house even with the same heating running.

Manufacturers quote U-values for the door panel itself, not the finished installation. Gaps around the frame, a warped opening, or a missing threshold seal all add heat loss that the published figure does not capture.

Single skin vs double skin

Single-skin doors are a single sheet of steel or timber with no insulating layer. They are the cheapest option and are perfectly adequate for a detached garage used for storage, but they do nothing to slow heat loss and they sweat with condensation in cold weather.

Double-skin doors sandwich a rigid foam core, typically polyurethane, between two steel skins. This is standard on quality sectional doors and increasingly common on premium rollers. The foam both insulates and stiffens the panel, which also reduces the drumming noise a thin single skin makes in wind.

  • Single skin: lowest cost, no thermal benefit, prone to condensation on the inside face.
  • Foam-filled roller slat: a moderate step up, insulation sits inside a hollow slat profile.
  • Double-skin sectional panel: the best commonly available performance, continuous foam core edge to edge.
  • Perimeter and threshold seals matter as much as the panel: a well-insulated door with gappy seals still lets draughts through.

Garage conversions and attached garages

If the garage has been converted into a room, or shares a wall with a heated part of the house, the door specification stops being optional. Building control will usually expect the converted space to be treated like the rest of the house for insulation, and a single-skin door undermines that regardless of how well the walls and roof are done.

Where full conversion is not planned but the garage is used regularly, for a home gym, workshop or utility space, an insulated door plus draught sealing gets most of the benefit without the cost of a full conversion.

Draught proofing you can do without replacing the door

Not everyone is ready to replace a door purely for insulation. Several lower-cost measures reduce draughts on an existing door and are worth doing regardless of what you decide later.

  • Fit or renew the rubber threshold seal along the bottom of the door, the most common source of a visible draught.
  • Check side and top seals for perishing, especially on doors more than eight years old.
  • Have an installer check the frame is still square, a racked frame opens gaps that seals cannot close.
  • Weatherstrip any access door or vents fitted into the garage wall, not just the main door.

Condensation and how to reduce it

Condensation forms when warm, moist air meets a cold surface, and an uninsulated steel door is exactly that surface in a Northern Ireland winter. It shows up as dripping panels, rust starting at the bottom rail, and a damp smell if the garage is enclosed and poorly ventilated.

Insulating the door reduces the temperature difference that causes it. Ventilation helps too: a small amount of background airflow stops moisture building up, which matters if the garage stores bikes, tools or a car overnight.

Is the upgrade worth it

On a detached garage used for storage, insulation makes little practical difference and is not worth paying extra for. On an attached, heated, or regularly used garage, it is one of the few upgrades that changes daily comfort rather than just appearance, and it typically also improves noise and rigidity.

When replacing a door for other reasons, spending the modest difference to move from single to double skin is usually worthwhile if the garage is used for anything beyond parking.

Does an insulated door stop condensation completely?
It reduces condensation significantly by keeping the internal face closer to room temperature, but it will not eliminate it entirely if the garage is poorly ventilated or very humid.
Can I add insulation to my existing door instead of replacing it?
Retrofit insulation kits exist for some panel types but rarely match the performance or fit of a factory foam-filled door, and they can add weight the existing motor and hinges were not designed for. A replacement is usually the more reliable route.
Does insulation affect the price much?
It is one of the larger cost factors on a quote, but the difference between single and double skin is smaller than people expect relative to the whole job, and it is far cheaper to specify at install than to address later.
Will a better door stop draughts from my garage reaching the house?
It helps considerably on an attached garage, but check the connecting internal door and wall too, heat loss often travels through more than one route.
Do roller doors insulate as well as sectional doors?
Foam-filled roller slats improve on single skin but generally do not match a double-skin sectional panel, because the slat profile limits how much foam sits in the wall of the material.
Is a U-value the only thing to check on a spec sheet?
No. Seal quality, frame fit and installation accuracy all affect real-world performance, so a good U-value on paper still needs a competent install to deliver it.
