Choosing a garage door material and finish
Material choice is where appearance and longevity meet. Northern Ireland is wet, often windy and, on the coast, salty — conditions that expose a poor finish quickly.
This is what we see holding up on the doors we go back to service.
The main materials
Each has a genuine place; none is universally best.

Finishes that last in this climate
Factory-applied powder and laminate finishes vastly outperform anything applied on site. On exposed or coastal properties, specify a finish rated for that exposure and rinse salt off a few times a year — it takes minutes and doubles the time the door looks new.
Darker colours show less road grime; very light colours show it immediately but hide fading better on south-facing elevations.
Matching what is already there
Anthracite remains the default on modern builds because it sits well against grey window frames and render. Wood-effect finishes work best on traditional frontages, stone and brick where a flat modern colour looks out of place.
If you are matching existing windows or a front door, get a physical sample rather than relying on a screen — RAL numbers on a monitor are not reliable.
Questions we get asked
- Which material is best near the coast?
- Aluminium and well-coated galvanised steel both perform, provided the finish is specified for coastal exposure and the door is rinsed occasionally. Untreated steel fixings are the usual failure point, so quality of hardware matters as much as the panel.
- Do timber-effect doors look convincing?
- Good laminates do, particularly at normal viewing distance on a frontage. Cheap prints do not, and they fade unevenly. It is worth seeing a sample in daylight.
- Can I repaint a garage door later?
- Steel doors can be repainted with the correct preparation and paint system, but it will never match the durability of a factory finish. Choosing the right colour at order stage is the better route.
- Does a darker colour get hotter?
- It does absorb more heat, which is rarely an issue in this climate, though it is one more reason insulated construction is worthwhile on an attached garage.
- Can you match my window frames?
- Usually. Bring us the RAL reference or a sample and we will confirm what is available in the door range that suits your opening.
