Deciding between manual and electric operation
Manual or electric: choosing how your garage door opens
Most people arrive at this decision late, after the door type and colour are already settled. It is worth thinking about earlier, because operation affects the frame, the headroom you need, the wiring, and in some cases which door types remain available to you at all.
There is no universally correct answer. A rarely used single garage on a rural site can be perfectly served by a manual door for twenty years. A double door used four times a day on a wet commuter route rarely is.

Start with how often the door moves
Frequency, not budget, is the honest starting point. A door lifted twice a week is a minor chore. The same door lifted twice a day, in the dark, in rain, with shopping in one hand, becomes the thing you resent about the house.
Count the real number of daily openings across a typical week, including anyone else in the household. Once that number passes two or three, the case for automation stops being about convenience and starts being about whether the garage gets used at all.
- Under five openings a week: manual is genuinely fine if the door is light and balanced.
- Five to fifteen a week: automation is a comfort upgrade, worth it if budget allows.
- Daily car access: automation is close to essential, particularly on a double opening.
- Anyone with limited grip, shoulder or back strength: treat automation as a requirement, not an option.
Door weight and width change the calculation
A manual door is only pleasant to use while it stays balanced. Springs do the lifting, and as they age the door gets heavier at the point where you are least able to help it, near the bottom of the travel. Wide double doors, insulated double-skin panels and timber leaves all start heavier and age less forgivingly.
Continuous-curtain roller doors on wide openings are the clearest case. Above a certain width, hauling the curtain by hand is unreasonable enough that manufacturers effectively assume a motor, and the door is specified around it.
What automation actually needs on site
Automation is not just a motor bolted to an existing door. It needs a fused electrical supply within reach of the opening, room for the operator in the headroom above the door, and safety devices positioned where they can see the closing path.
On a retrofit, the supply is usually the constraint. Running a new circuit into a detached garage is electrical work in its own right and is worth pricing before deciding, so the figure does not appear as a surprise after the door is ordered.
- A switched fused supply, ideally on its own circuit rather than a spurred extension lead.
- Headroom for a tube motor or an operator boom, depending on door type.
- Photocells or force-limiting so the door reverses on an obstruction.
- A manual release you can reach from inside if power fails.
Safety obligations differ between the two
A manual door is a mechanical hazard you control directly with your own hands. A powered door moves whether or not you are watching, which is why powered installations carry force-limitation and obstruction-detection expectations that manual doors do not.
This matters most in households with children or pets, and on any door shared by more than one family. If you automate, the safety kit is not an upsell to decline; it is the part that makes the automation defensible.
Running costs and what tends to fail
Electricity use is trivial. A domestic operator draws power for a few seconds per cycle and sits at standby the rest of the time, which is not a meaningful line on a household bill.
The real difference is in the failure modes. Manual doors fail mechanically and predictably: springs, cables, rollers, worn tracks. Electric doors add remotes, receiver boards, capacitors and photocell alignment to that list. Neither is more fragile overall, but electric doors give you more small things to keep working and one large convenience to miss when they stop.
When we advise staying manual
We say this more often than people expect. A detached, lightly used garage on an awkward power run, with a light single-skin door in good balance, is a poor candidate for automation. The money is better spent on the door itself, on seals, or on getting the frame properly square.
It also stays reversible. A well-specified manual roller or sectional door can be automated later, provided the door was chosen with that in mind and the headroom exists. Ask for that to be checked at survey even if you have no plans to automate now.
Questions we get asked
- Can an existing manual door be automated later?
- Often yes, if the door is a suitable type, still runs freely and has the headroom for an operator. Very old doors, badly worn springs or a racked frame usually make retrofitting a false economy compared with replacing the door and automating in one visit.
- What happens to an electric door in a power cut?
- Powered doors include a manual release so you can disengage the motor and move the door by hand. It is worth having whoever uses the garage shown how it works at handover rather than discovering it during an outage.
- Is a manual door harder to break into than an electric one?
- Neither is inherently weaker. Security comes from the locking arrangement, anti-lift protection and how the door is fixed into the opening, not from whether a motor is fitted.
- Do electric doors open more slowly?
- Domestic operators run at a controlled speed for safety, so a powered door is often slower than a brisk manual lift. The trade-off is that you are not the one doing the lifting, and you can start it before you reach the door.
- Can I have automation on any door type?
- Most roller, sectional and up-and-over doors can be automated with the right operator. Side-hinged doors can be automated too but need more specific hardware, so raise it before the door is ordered rather than after.
