Roller garage door repair: common faults and fixes
Roller garage doors most often need repair for one of four reasons: the motor or remote has stopped working, the curtain has come out of its guide rails, slats have been dented or damaged, or the seals and brushes have worn. Almost all of these can be fixed without replacing the whole door.

Checks you can make first
Before booking a repair, a few quick checks can save a visit or help the engineer bring the right parts.
- Check the power supply and any fused spur or isolator for the motor.
- Try the wall switch as well as the remote; if the switch works, the fault is in the remote or receiver.
- Replace the remote battery.
- Look along the guide rails for anything blocking them.
- Wipe the safety sensors or edge, if fitted.
Common faults and fixes
If those checks do not help, these are the usual causes.

Curtain out of its guides
If a car or strong wind has pushed the curtain out of a guide rail, the door may jam or run crooked. Do not keep running the motor, as it can damage the slats and the endstops. Isolate the power and call us. The engineer refeeds the curtain, straightens or replaces the rail if it has been bent, and checks the endstops that stop the curtain winding right into the box.
Motor and control faults
Roller door motors sit inside the barrel, so a failed motor is reached by opening the box. Many faults are in the control unit or limit settings rather than the motor itself. Where the motor has failed, it can usually be replaced without changing the curtain. If the door is stuck closed, most motors have a manual override so the door can be opened by hand; your manual or our engineer can show you where it is.
Commercial roller shutters
Commercial shutters are larger and heavier, and a stuck shutter can shut a business down for the day. The faults are similar but the parts are heavier duty. Keeping a roller door running
Keep the guide rails clear of leaves and grit, do not lean anything against the curtain, and listen for new noises. A periodic service checks the motor, limits, safety devices and seals before small wear turns into a breakdown.

- How do I open a roller door in a power cut?
- Most have a manual override, usually a crank or release. If you cannot find it, call us and we can talk you through it or attend.
- My roller door has come off its track, can I push it back?
- Isolate the power and leave it. Forcing the curtain back can bend slats and damage the endstops.
