Garage door remote not working
A dead remote is inconvenient rather than serious, and it is one of the few garage door faults genuinely worth trying yourself before calling anyone.
Work through these in order; the first two solve most cases.
In order of likelihood
Test after each step rather than changing several things at once.
- Replace the battery, even if the LED still lights — a weak cell transmits at reduced range before it dies.
- Try the wall control. If that works, the operator and door are fine and the fault is the handset.
- Re-pair the handset to the operator following the sequence in your manual.
- Test from close range. If it works at two metres but not from the road, it is range or interference.
- Check the aerial wire hanging from the operator has not been tucked up or snapped.
- Consider interference from LED lighting or a nearby transmitter if several handsets weakened at once.
When it is not the remote
If neither the handset nor the wall control does anything, the problem is power or the operator, not the remote. If the door starts and stops, it is more likely sensors or force settings.
Adding handsets and keypads
Most operators support additional handsets, and an external keypad is a practical option if people in the household regularly arrive on foot or by bike. We can supply and pair compatible units for the common makes.
If a handset has been lost, it is worth clearing all paired remotes and re-pairing only the ones you hold.

- How do I re-pair a remote?
- The sequence varies by make — usually a learn button on the operator followed by a press on the handset within a few seconds. We can talk you through it or do it during a visit.
- Can you supply replacement handsets?
- Yes, for the common makes we work with. Tell us the make and model on the operator label and we will confirm compatibility.
- Why has the range dropped?
- Usually a weakening battery, a disturbed aerial wire, or new electrical interference nearby such as LED floodlighting.
- I lost a remote — is that a security risk?
- Potentially. Clear the operator's paired remotes and re-pair only the handsets you still have; that immediately invalidates the missing one.
- Can I open the door from my phone?
- Some operators support a smart module. We can advise what your unit supports rather than selling you something it will not work with.
