Should you repair or replace your garage door?
We get asked this on most repair call-outs, and the honest answer is that plenty of doors are worth fixing. A single failed spring on an otherwise sound door is a repair, not an excuse for a sales pitch.
The point where it flips is usually recognisable, and it comes down to four questions.
Four questions that decide it
If you answer 'yes' to two or more of these, replacement is usually the better value.
- Is the frame or subframe corroded, rotten or moving? The door depends on it entirely.
- Has this door already had two or more repairs in the last couple of years?
- Is the repair cost approaching half the price of a new fitted door?
- Are parts obsolete for this make, meaning improvised or fabricated components?
Clear repairs
A snapped spring, a frayed cable, worn rollers, a failed operator on an otherwise good door, damaged seals, a door off its track after an impact — these are all straightforward repairs on a sound door and we do them daily.
A well-maintained door of any age is generally worth keeping running.
Clear replacements
A single-skin up-and-over with a rotten timber subframe, visible panel corrosion, a bent track and no available parts is at the end of its life. Repairing it means paying labour to extend something that will fail again within the year.
The same applies where the door no longer suits the use of the space — an uninsulated door on a converted garage will keep disappointing you no matter how well it is serviced.
What we will tell you on site
Our engineer will show you the failed component, explain what caused it, and quote the repair. If we think the repair is poor value we will say so and quote the alternative — but the choice stays with you, and we will carry out a sensible repair if that is what you want.
Questions we get asked
- Is it worth repairing a 20-year-old door?
- If the frame is sound, the panel is not corroded and parts are available, yes. Age alone is not a reason to replace.
- How much is a typical spring repair?
- It depends on the door and spring type, and we quote before starting work. It is invariably a fraction of a replacement door, which is why we replace springs on sound doors every week.
- Will you try to sell me a new door on a repair visit?
- No. We quote the repair. We only recommend replacement where the numbers or the condition make repair poor value, and we explain exactly why.
- Can you repair a door another company installed?
- Yes, across most common makes. We will tell you if a part is genuinely unobtainable rather than guessing.
- If I replace, is the repair visit wasted?
- No. The assessment gives us the measurements and condition notes we need, so we can move straight to quoting the replacement.
