A door that has come out of its track sits visibly askew, binds against the frame, or hangs at an angle. It is usually the result of an impact, a snapped cable, worn rollers, or a track that has been knocked out of alignment.
It is also the fault where continued operation causes the most collateral damage, because the motor keeps pulling against a door that physically cannot travel.
Common causes
Almost every case we attend is one of these.
- A vehicle or trailer clipping the door or the track.
- A lifting cable snapping or unwinding from the drum, dropping one side.
- Worn rollers with enough play to jump the track lip.
- A track fixing that has loosened or corroded away from the wall.
- An obstruction under the bottom rail on one side only.
Why not to force it
Forcing a derailed door bends the track further, loads the opposite cable, twists panels and can pull the operator's mounting out of the ceiling. What starts as a realignment and a set of rollers becomes a track, panel and operator job.
Isolate the power, leave the door where it is, and secure the opening if it is stuck open.
How we put it right
We support the door safely, release tension where it is safe to do so, straighten or replace the affected track section, renew damaged rollers and cables, re-seat the door and re-balance it. Then we run the full travel repeatedly to confirm it tracks cleanly under load.
Where a panel is deformed beyond safe operation, we will say so rather than reinstating a door that will derail again.
Questions we get asked
- Can I push it back on myself?
- We strongly advise against it. The door is under tension and heavy; realigning it without supporting the weight properly is how people get hurt and how tracks get bent.
- Is the door safe to leave overnight?
- If it is stuck open, the opening is insecure. Call us — we run 24/7 cover and can make the opening safe even if a part has to be ordered.
- Will the whole door need replacing?
- Usually not. Most derailments are resolved with track work, rollers and cables. Replacement only becomes the answer where panels are badly deformed.
- How long does the repair take?
- A typical realignment with roller and cable renewal is completed on the first visit, using stock we carry.
- How do I stop it happening again?
- Worn rollers and loose fixings are the preventable causes, and an annual service catches both.
