Side hinged or up and over: which suits your garage?
These two are the traditional pair, and people often shortlist both without realising how differently they behave once fitted. An up and over tilts out and back on gear inside the garage. A side hinged pair swings open like doors, on hinges fixed to the reveal.
That difference cascades into everything else: how much drive you need, whether you can walk in without opening the whole thing, what happens if there are beams overhead, and how each one locks.

Choose up and over when
The garage is used mainly for a car, the ceiling is clear, and budget matters. It is the cheapest fitted door we supply, panel patterns like Georgian and vertical rib still look right on older Northern Ireland frontages, and a straight swap is normally a half day.
It is also the sensible choice when you want the same appearance back on a house where the door is part of the frontage character.

Choose side hinged when
The garage is a workshop, a store, a bike shed or a utility route into the house, and you open it by hand several times a day. Opening one leaf instead of the whole door changes how usable that space is.
It is also the answer where an up and over physically cannot go: pitched roofs, low lintels, exposed beams, or storage racked above the opening. Nothing tracks across the ceiling, so overhead space stays yours.

Where each one disappoints people
Up and over doors surprise people with the outward swing. On a short drive the leaf can clip a parked car as it lifts, and on a single skin door the garage stays as cold as it ever was. Old canopy gear also converts to automation less cleanly than retractable gear.
Side hinged pairs surprise people with wind and with frames. An unstayed leaf catches a gust, which is why hold open stays are not optional on an exposed site, and a pair is only as secure as the timber or steel it is hung on. Where a frame has rotted we renew it rather than hanging new leaves on tired material.
Security and weather in practice
A modern up and over locks centrally, and better leaves add side latching. A side hinged pair locks with shoot bolts top and bottom into the head and threshold plus a cylinder lock, which is a strong arrangement when the frame is sound.
For weather, full perimeter brush and rubber seals matter more on a hinged pair because there are two meeting edges rather than one. Specified properly, an insulated hinged pair outperforms a single skin up and over comfortably.
If neither quite fits
Where the drive is too short for either swing, a roller door is the honest answer because it lifts vertically into a box above the opening. Where warmth is the main objective and the ceiling is clear, a sectional door is a better performer than both of these.

- Can I fit a side hinged pair if my garage has no headroom?
- Yes, that is one of its main advantages. Side hinged doors need almost no clear headroom, so pitched roofs, beams and racked storage above the opening are not a problem.
- Do both types need clear space on the drive?
- Both do, but differently. An up and over needs around 600 mm in front for the tilt. A hinged pair needs enough room for the leaves to swing right open, which is usually more.
- Can either be automated?
- Both can. Up and over takes a boom operator, with a conversion kit needed on canopy gear. Side hinged pairs take twin swing arm operators provided the swing area stays permanently clear.
- Which is warmer?
- A double skin insulated side hinged pair with full perimeter seals, easily. Standard up and over leaves are single skin steel or GRP and are not insulated.
- Will you replace my frame as part of the quote?
- We quote the frame and the door together whenever the existing subframe is questionable. It matters most on hinged pairs, where the hinges depend entirely on what they are fixed into.
- Can you match a timber pair on a period property?
- Yes. Framed and ledged timber pairs are made and painted to order where a steel leaf would look wrong on the frontage.
