Garage door types compared: up and over, roller, sectional and side hinged
There are only four garage door types you realistically need to choose between in Northern Ireland, and each one wins on something different. This guide sets them side by side using the same criteria we use on a survey.

The four types at a glance
Read the table by the column that matters most to you. If you park close to the door, driveway space decides it. If the garage is a workshop or a room, insulation decides it.

Up and over doors
A single panel on a canopy or retractable frame. It is the cheapest way to replace a like for like door and still the most common door on older estates.
The trade off is the swing. The panel travels outwards as it lifts, so a car parked close to the door blocks it.

- Simple mechanism with widely available parts.
- Needs clear space in front of the opening.
- Mostly single skin, so it does little for heat loss.
Roller doors
The slats curl into a barrel above the opening, so nothing moves outside the door line. This is why roller doors suit short driveways and shared entries.
Insulated foam filled aluminium slats are quieter, stiffer and warmer than single skin steel, and they are what we fit on most homes.

Sectional doors
Hinged panels that rise vertically and run back under the ceiling on tracks. Sectional doors take the thickest insulation and seal the best on all four edges.
They need internal headroom and clear ceiling space, which is the only reason we ever rule them out.

- Vertical lift, so no outward swing.
- Widest choice of finishes and glazing options.
- Requires internal headroom and clear ceiling run.
Side hinged doors
Two leaves on a frame, opening like conventional doors. They are the easiest type to use when you are on foot with one leaf open, and they suit older openings with awkward headroom.
They need swing space, and in exposed spots they catch wind, so a decent stay is not optional.
- Walk in access without lifting the whole door.
- Works where headroom is too tight for sectional tracks.
- Needs clear swing space in front.
- Automation is possible but less common than roller or sectional.
How we would decide on your driveway
On a survey we measure the structural opening, check headroom and side room, look at where the car sits and ask what the garage is used for. Those four answers narrow it to one or two types almost every time.
If the garage is heated, converted or holds anything that dislikes damp, we lean insulated sectional or insulated roller. If the driveway is short, roller wins. If budget leads and there is space out front, up and over is honest value.

- Can any type be made electric?
- Roller and sectional doors are the most straightforward to automate, and up and over doors can usually be converted with the right operator. We confirm on survey rather than promising in advance.
