How to recognise it

You will usually see it before you diagnose it.

  • A steel cable hanging slack, coiled loosely, or lying on the floor.
  • The door hanging crooked, one side several inches lower than the other.
  • A frayed or birdcaged cable end near the bottom bracket or the drum.
  • A bang or twang followed by the door jamming diagonally in the opening.
  • An automated door pulling to one side and grinding as it tries to move.

Why this one is different

Most garage door faults are inconvenient. This one stores energy. The spring is still wound and now has nothing balanced to work against, so a door can slam shut or a cable can whip when disturbed. Hands, fingers and heads are the usual casualties.

That is not scaremongering to sell a call-out. It is why cable and spring work sits outside DIY, alongside anything else on a door that is under tension.

What to do right now

Isolate the operator at the plug or fused switch so nobody presses a remote. Keep children and pets out of the garage. Move a car out only if the door is fully open and clearly stable, and never stand underneath it while doing so.

If the door is stuck part-open and there is no safe way past, wait for the engineer rather than propping it. Props slip.

Why cables fail

Corrosion is the leading cause here, especially where damp gets into the bottom bracket and works up the strands. After that comes wear from running off a worn drum, a door that has been out of balance for months, and impact damage from a vehicle.

Cables are consumables like springs. When one goes, the other side has done the same number of cycles in the same conditions, which is why they are normally renewed as a pair.

The repair

We secure and support the door, release tension safely, fit correctly rated cables, check the drums and bottom brackets, then re-balance the door and prove it holds position through the full travel. On an automated door, force and limits are re-commissioned afterwards so the operator matches the restored balance.

Questions we get asked

Can I wind the cable back onto the drum?
Please do not. Getting a cable back on means handling a component that is either under tension or about to be, and it is a common route to serious hand injuries.
The door still moves. Can I use it until you arrive?
No. Every cycle on one cable damages drums, brackets and the opposite cable, and the door can jam or drop mid-travel.
Is the spring broken too?
Sometimes. A spring failure can shock-load a cable and take it out, and a snapped cable can leave a spring unbalanced. We check both together.
Will both cables be replaced?
Normally yes. They share an age, a cycle count and an environment, so replacing one alone tends to mean a second visit soon after.
Can this happen without warning?
It can, though rust streaks, fraying near the bottom bracket and a door that has grown noisy or heavy are the usual advance notice. Annual servicing is where those get spotted.
