Directly: when a safety device on a powered door is unhappy, the door refuses to close under power. That refusal is designed behaviour, not a breakdown, and it is why your operator flashes, beeps or ignores the remote while the wall button still works.

Understanding which device is complaining, and why, turns a frustrating morning into a short job.

The two devices doing the work

A photocell pair sits low in the opening: one unit sends an infrared beam, the other receives it, and breaking the beam stops or reverses the door. A safety edge runs along the closing edge itself and reacts to contact, which is common on commercial roller shutters and on domestic doors fitted to a higher specification.

They protect different moments. The beam catches something standing in the opening; the edge catches something the beam missed.

Reading the lights

Indicator behaviour varies by make, but the patterns are consistent enough to narrow things down.

  • No light on either unit: lost power to the sensor circuit, or a broken wire.
  • Light on the sender, none on the receiver: misalignment or a blocked lens.
  • Both lit but flickering: a marginal beam, often vibration or a loose bracket.
  • Operator beeping and refusing remote closing while the wall button closes it: a classic reported sensor fault, with the wall control acting as the supervised override.
  • Repeated flashes on the operator head: a stored diagnostic code worth checking against the manual.

Common causes we find

Vibration walks brackets out of alignment over months. Spiders build across lenses because insects gather at the infrared. Strimmers and reversing bumpers knock units askew. Damp gets into a junction and corrodes a terminal. On safety edges, the rubber profile splits or the pressure switch inside it wears out.

Fair weather matters too: low winter sun straight into a receiver lens can wash out the beam for an hour a day and look exactly like an intermittent fault.

What to try, and what not to

Wipe both lenses dry, clear anything standing near the opening, and check nothing has been leaned against a sensor. Look for a bracket you can see has moved. That much is fair game for an owner.

Do not bridge sensor terminals to make the door close, and do not tape a sender at an angle to hold a beam. Anything that defeats the protection leaves a powered door closing blind onto whatever is beneath it. If wiring, alignment or a safety edge is at fault, it needs fixing properly.

How we deal with it

We test the beam through the whole opening, check continuity and terminals, realign or replace units as needed, test safety edge response with a soft obstruction, then run full cycles to confirm the door stops and reverses when it should. On commercial shutters, we treat the safety edge as part of the door's routine maintenance rather than an optional extra.

Questions we get asked

Why does the wall button close it but the remote will not?
Many operators allow a supervised close from a fixed control while blocking unsupervised remote closing during a reported sensor fault. It is a strong hint that a safety device is the issue.
How high should photocells sit?
Low in the opening, so they catch a small child or a foot rather than only tall obstructions. An engineer will set them to the manufacturer's specification for your door.
Can sunlight really trigger this?
Yes. Strong low sun into the receiving lens can swamp the infrared beam, which is why some faults appear only at one time of year and one time of day.
Do all garage doors have sensors?
Manually operated doors do not need them. Powered doors rely on a safety system, whether photocells, a safety edge, or force detection in the operator, and often a combination.
Is a split safety edge urgent?
Treat it as a priority, particularly on a commercial shutter in a workplace. Until it is replaced the closing edge has lost its protection.
