Named storms reliably produce a run of damaged doors across Northern Ireland — bowed panels, doors blown out of their guides, bent tracks and torn seals. An exposed or gable-end opening takes the worst of it.
The priority order is safety, security, then repair.
Immediately after the damage
Isolate power to any operator. Do not attempt to operate a bowed or partially detached door — wind loading has already stressed components that may now fail suddenly.
Keep people and vehicles clear of the opening, and photograph the damage from several angles before anything is moved.
Making it secure
An open or unsecured garage is both a security and a safety issue, particularly where the garage connects to the house. We can attend out of hours and make the opening safe even where a replacement part has to be ordered.
On commercial premises we prioritise getting the unit secure and, where possible, operational for the next trading day.
What your insurer usually wants
Typically: dated photographs of the damage, a written description of the cause and a repair or replacement quotation. We supply a clear written assessment and quotation you can pass straight to a claim.
We do not inflate assessments or invent damage — the report describes what we found.
Reducing the risk next time
Doors on exposed elevations benefit from correct wind-load specification, sound frame fixings into masonry, and reinforced or braced curtains on wide openings. Annual servicing catches the loose fixings that turn a gust into a failure.
Questions we get asked
- Can you attend during a storm?
- We attend as soon as it is safe to work at the opening. We will not put an engineer on a ladder in dangerous wind, and we will tell you honestly when that is the case.
- Will you make the garage secure the same day?
- That is the first objective on every emergency call-out, even where the full repair needs an ordered part.
- Do you deal with insurers directly?
- We provide the written assessment, photographs and quotation your insurer needs. The claim stays between you and them.
- Is a bowed door repairable?
- Sometimes, depending on the extent and whether the panel structure is compromised. We assess rather than assume, and we will not reinstate a door that is unsafe.
- Can a door be specified for high wind exposure?
- Yes. Wind-load rated specifications and reinforced curtains exist, and they are worth it on exposed gable-end and coastal openings.
