Cost research before booking a repair
What garage door repairs cost in Northern Ireland
A garage door repair invoice usually has two parts: a callout to diagnose the fault and the parts and labour to fix it. Some faults are a fifteen-minute adjustment; others involve stripping a spring system under tension, which takes longer and carries more risk.
This page gives indicative ranges for the repairs we see most often across Dromore, Lisburn, Banbridge and the wider NI patch, so you have a sense of scale before an engineer arrives.
Every job still gets a written price before work starts. Ranges below are for a straightforward single garage door in reasonable condition; older, rusted or non-standard doors can move the figure.

- Standard callout
- Fixed fee, confirmed on booking
- Torsion spring pair
- £150, £280 fitted
- Motor replacement
- £220, £450 fitted
- Out-of-hours repair
- Available, premium applies
How repair pricing works
The callout covers an engineer travelling to you, diagnosing the fault and, on most jobs, completing straightforward repairs in the same visit. Parts are quoted separately because springs, cables, rollers and motors vary by door make, weight and age.
If a part needs ordering, for example a specific motor board, we will tell you on site rather than leaving you guessing.
Typical repair costs by fault
These are indicative fitted ranges for common faults on a standard single or double garage door. Commercial shutters and industrial doors are priced separately because of their size and duty cycle.
| Fault | Typical fitted cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Broken torsion spring (pair) | £150, £280 | Springs are usually replaced in pairs even if only one has failed |
| Snapped cable | £90, £160 | Often found alongside a worn drum or pulley |
| Motor failure | £220, £450 | Depends on whether the existing rail and arm can be reused |
| Off-track door | £80, £180 | Cost rises if the track or rollers are bent, not just displaced |
| Damaged panel or slat | £120, £350 | Sourcing a colour-matched panel can add lead time |
| Remote or sensor fault | £60, £140 | Sometimes resolved without a part, just diagnosis and reset |
Callout versus parts, what you are actually paying for
The callout pays for a qualified engineer, the diagnostic time and the tools to work on a door safely, particularly anything under spring tension. Parts pricing reflects the manufacturer, the door's age and whether a like-for-like replacement exists or a compatible alternative is needed.
- Genuine parts from the original manufacturer cost more but avoid fit issues later.
- Compatible parts are cheaper and often perfectly adequate for older or discontinued doors.
- Labour time varies with access, for example a garage packed with storage takes longer to work around.
When repair beats replacement, and when it does not
A single failed spring, cable or motor on an otherwise sound door is almost always worth repairing, particularly if the door is under ten years old. Repair keeps the existing frame, finish and any recent automation, and it is usually a fraction of the cost of a new door.
Replacement starts to make more sense when the door has rusted through, when the frame itself has failed, or when you are facing a second or third repair within a couple of years. At that point the running cost of patching an ageing door can exceed a new one over its lifetime.
Storm and impact damage
Wind-driven rain and gusts off the Irish Sea can rack a panel or tear a slat loose, particularly on exposed gable-end garages. Impact damage from a vehicle knock is also common. Both are usually repairable if caught early, but a delay can let water into the mechanism and turn a panel repair into a motor and track job.
Questions we get asked
- Do you charge extra for evening or weekend repairs?
- Yes, out-of-hours callouts carry a premium over a standard weekday visit, which we confirm when you book. We are available around the clock for genuine emergencies such as a door stuck open.
- Will you always know the price before you start work?
- You get a written price after diagnosis, before any repair begins. If the fault is more involved than expected, we explain the revised figure rather than proceeding without agreement.
- Is it cheaper to replace both springs even if only one broke?
- Usually yes in the long run. Torsion springs are sold and rated as pairs, and the surviving spring is typically close to the end of its life anyway, so replacing both avoids a second callout within months.
- Can I fix a broken spring myself to save money?
- We would strongly advise against it. Torsion springs are under significant tension and have caused serious injuries to untrained people attempting DIY repairs. It is not a cost worth risking.
- Do older or discontinued doors cost more to repair?
- Sometimes, if parts are no longer stocked by the original manufacturer. We generally find a compatible alternative, but sourcing can add a short delay compared with a current model.
- What if the repair reveals a bigger problem?
- We will always tell you honestly if a repair is not good value against replacement, rather than fitting parts to a door that is on its way out. That advice costs nothing extra.
