Insulated garage doors

Insulated garage doors, supplied and fitted

If your garage shares a wall with the house, has a bedroom above it or doubles as a gym or workshop, an insulated garage door makes a noticeable difference to warmth, draughts and noise. We supply and fit insulated roller and sectional garage doors across Northern Ireland, with a free on-site quote.

What makes a garage door insulated

Foam-filled roller slats

Insulated roller doors use twin-skin aluminium slats with a foam core. They roll into a compact box above the opening, so they suit garages with little headroom or a short driveway.

Twin-skin sectional panels

Sectional doors use thick panels with insulation bonded between two steel skins. The panels are deeper than roller slats, which is why sectionals usually perform best for heat retention.

Seals all round

Insulation in the door only helps if air cannot get round it. Look for a flexible bottom seal that follows uneven floors, brush or rubber side seals and a header seal at the top.

Less noise in and out

A solid, insulated curtain dampens traffic and street noise coming in, and keeps noise from a workshop or gym from carrying out to the neighbours.

Manual or electric

Insulated doors are heavier than single-skin doors. An electric operator makes daily use easy, and a sectional or roller door can be supplied motorised from the start.

Fitted to the opening

Every door is measured on site so the guides, box or tracks suit your opening, headroom and side room. A good fit matters as much as the door itself.

When insulation really matters

The garages that gain most are the ones that connect to living space. An integral garage loses heat straight into the hallway or kitchen next to it, and a room above a garage sits over what is often the coldest part of the house. In both cases the old door is usually the weakest point.

Garages used as gyms, home offices, utility rooms or workshops also benefit, because people spend time in them and often heat them. Insulation helps keep tools, bikes and stored items drier, and reduces the condensation you can get on a thin metal door in winter.

If the garage is detached and used only for the car, insulation is less important. We will talk through how you use the space rather than recommend the most expensive option by default.

Insulated roller or insulated sectional?

Both are good choices; the right one depends on the opening. An insulated roller garage door coils into a box above the opening, so it needs very little headroom and leaves the ceiling clear. Roller doors start from £789*, as listed on our roller doors page.

An insulated sectional garage door lifts on tracks into the roof space. Its deeper panels and continuous seals usually make it the warmer of the two, and it opens vertically, so you can park right up to it. Sectional doors start from £1,250*.

What to ask before you buy

Ask how thick the panels or slats are and what the insulation is, whether seals are fitted on all four sides, and how the door will be fixed to your opening. Ask whether the door will be manual or electric, and if it will be motorised, what happens in a power cut.

With qualifying new installations we offer free removal and disposal of your old garage door, so you are not left with the old one to deal with.

Insulated garage door questions

Are insulated garage doors worth it?
They are worth it when the garage is heated, attached to the house or used as more than storage — an integral garage, a room above, a home gym or a workshop. For a detached garage used only to park a car, a well-sealed standard door is often enough, and we will tell you so at the survey.
Is an insulated roller door warmer than a sectional?
A sectional door usually has thicker panels and continuous seals, so it tends to hold heat better. An insulated roller door uses foam-filled slats and is still a big improvement on a single-skin door, and it suits openings where there is little headroom or no room for ceiling tracks.
Can I insulate my existing garage door?
Add-on insulation kits exist for some doors, but they add weight that the springs or motor were not set up for, and they do nothing for the gaps around the frame. In most cases replacing the door with a factory-insulated one gives a better, safer result.
