Urgent fault, door part open
Garage door stuck halfway open
Do not force a part-open door. If it feels heavy or drops when released, stop and call.
A door stuck halfway is the fault we attend most often out of hours, because it leaves the garage open and the car either trapped inside or stranded outside.
The cause is almost always one of four things: something in the path, a safety device stopping travel, a failed counterbalance, or a track or roller problem. Two of those are safe to check yourself and two are not.

- 24/7 across Northern Ireland
- Safe to check yourself
- Obstructions and photocells
- Never touch
- Springs, cables and tension parts
- Typical visit
- Same day where possible
Check these two things first
Look along the full length of both tracks for anything wedged in the path: a bike pedal, a bin lid, a stone, or a bolt that has worked loose. Debris in one track will stall a door mid travel and is by far the most common harmless cause.
Then look at the photocells near the floor on either side of the opening. If a cobweb, a leaf, a knocked bracket or bright low sun has broken the beam, an automated door will refuse to complete its travel. Clean the lenses and check they face each other squarely.
- Clear anything sitting in either track, then try one cycle
- Wipe both photocell lenses and check alignment
- Look for a flashing status light on the operator, which usually indicates a safety trip
- Check nothing is stacked against the inside of the door
Signs it is the counterbalance, and why you must stop
If you release the operator and the door feels extremely heavy, drops on its own, or sits crooked with one side lower than the other, the counterbalance has failed. On a roller door this is the spring inside the barrel; on an up-and-over or sectional it is a spring and cable set.
Those components hold enough stored energy to cause serious injury. We will not tell you how to adjust, release or replace them, and no amount of care makes it a home job. Leave the door where it is, keep people away from underneath, and call an engineer.
- A bang heard before it stuck almost always means a broken spring
- A visible gap or kink in a spring coil is conclusive
- A slack or off-drum cable, or one side hanging lower, means stop
- Repeatedly operating the motor against a failed spring will destroy the motor too
Track, roller and alignment faults
A door that binds at the same point every time is usually running on a bent track, a collapsed roller or a bracket that has worked loose. It will often move a little with encouragement, which tempts people into forcing it, and forcing it is what turns a roller replacement into a panel replacement.
Storm damage and vehicle knocks are the usual causes of a sudden alignment fault. Older doors more often reach it gradually as rollers wear oval.
Securing the opening tonight
If the door cannot be closed safely, the priority is the opening rather than the door. We can attend, make the door safe, and secure the garage so it is not left open overnight, then return with parts if something has to be ordered.
For commercial units and shop premises we can also fit a temporary closure while a replacement curtain or panel is being made.
What the repair usually involves
Costs depend on the cause rather than the symptom, which is why we diagnose before quoting.
| Cause | Typical fix | Door back in use |
|---|---|---|
| Obstruction or debris | Clear, inspect track, cycle test | Same visit |
| Photocell trip or misalignment | Realign, clean, retest safety devices | Same visit |
| Worn or collapsed rollers | Roller set replacement and realignment | Same visit |
| Broken spring or cable | Matched spring or cable set, rebalance | Same visit if the part is on the van |
| Bent track after impact | Track section replacement | Same visit or next, depending on section |
| Failed operator gear | Gear or operator replacement | Same visit on common models |
Questions we get asked
- Can I force a garage door stuck halfway closed?
- No. If the door is stuck because of a failed spring or cable, forcing it can let it drop. If it is stuck on a bent track, forcing it usually damages panels as well. Clear obstructions and photocells, and if it still will not travel, stop.
- Why did it stop halfway with no warning?
- There is usually warning, it is just quiet: a change in noise, a door that has become heavier by hand, or one that drifts instead of holding position. A sudden stop with a bang is a broken spring.
- Is it safe to leave the car under a part-open door?
- No. Move the car out from under the opening if you can do so without operating the door, and keep children and pets away from underneath until it has been made safe.
- Can you get it closed the same day?
- Usually yes. We carry common springs, cables, roller sets and operators, so most faults are resolved on the first visit. Where a part has to be made, we secure the opening in the meantime.
- Will my door need replacing?
- Rarely because of this fault alone. A stuck door is normally a component failure. Replacement only enters the conversation when the frame has failed or the door has taken structural damage.
- Do you charge more out of hours?
- Out-of-hours emergency attendance is priced separately from a daytime repair visit, and we tell you the rate on the phone before we set off, not afterwards.
