Roller shutter faults we repair
Motor not running
A motor that hums, clicks or does nothing may have a failed capacitor, a tripped thermal cut-out, a wiring fault or lost limits. We test it before deciding whether to repair or replace it.
Springs and barrel
Manual and spring-assisted shutters rely on springs in the barrel. When one weakens or breaks the curtain feels heavy or drops. This is under tension and is not a DIY job.
Damaged slats
Dented, bent or split slats can jam in the guides. Damaged sections can often be replaced without renewing the whole curtain.
Bent or loose guides
A knock from a car, a bin or a vehicle bends the side guides and pulls the curtain out of line. Realigning or replacing the guide usually restores smooth running.
Worn bottom rail
The bottom rail and its seal take the most wear. A damaged rail lets in draughts and water and can stop the shutter closing fully.
Manual override and safety edges
If the manual override will not engage or a safety edge keeps stopping the door, we check and repair the override, the edge and its wiring.

Home roller doors and commercial shutters
At home, a broken roller garage door usually means the car is stuck inside or the garage cannot be locked. For businesses, a shutter that will not close leaves the premises insecure. We repair both. For other commercial doors, such as sectional bay doors and high-speed doors, see our commercial door repairs page.
We work on roller doors and shutters whoever fitted them, manual or electric. Tell us the make if you know it, what the door is doing and whether it can be closed, and send a photo if it is safe to take one.
Before we arrive
Keep people and vehicles clear of the opening. Do not try to force a jammed curtain, lever slats back into the guides or release a spring — the energy stored in a roller shutter can cause serious injury.
If the motor is labouring or the shutter is moving erratically, isolate the power. If you need to secure the opening and know how to use the manual override safely, you can, but stop if it does not engage easily.
Some faults have simple causes you can check first. Our problem guides cover a commercial shutter that is stuck and a garage door stuck halfway, and our roller garage door repair guide explains what is safe to look at yourself.
Repair, or replace?
We repair rather than replace wherever it makes sense. If a shutter is near the end of its life — heavy corrosion, a distorted barrel, or repeated faults — we will tell you plainly and quote for both options.
If replacement is the better answer, see our roller doors range. For every other type of garage door fault, go to garage door repair.
Roller shutter repair questions
- Can a roller shutter be repaired or does it need replacing?
- Most faults are repairable: a motor, a spring, a few damaged slats, a bent guide or a worn bottom rail can each be replaced on their own. Replacement makes more sense when the curtain is badly corroded along its length, the barrel is distorted or the same fault keeps coming back. We will explain which applies once we have seen the shutter.
- Do you repair shutters out of hours?
- Yes. We offer 24/7 call-outs, so a shutter that will not close or lock at night or over the weekend can be dealt with without waiting for office hours.
- Why does my roller shutter stop halfway?
- Common causes are an obstruction or dirt in the guides, a slat that has slipped out of line, a safety edge that has been triggered, or a motor that is overheating or has lost its limit settings. If the curtain is twisted or hanging unevenly, stop using it and call us rather than forcing it.
