Pedestrian and wicket doors

Garage door with pedestrian door

If you go in and out of the garage on foot many times a day, opening the whole door each time wastes heat and time. A garage door with a built-in pedestrian door — often called a wicket door — or a separate side door solves that. We supply and fit both options across Northern Ireland, with a free on-site quote.

Your options

Integrated wicket door

A pedestrian door built into the panels of a sectional garage door. It opens on its own hinges, while the main door stays closed.

Separate side door

A pedestrian door fitted in the garage wall, independent of the main door. It keeps the garage door design unchanged and gives a second way in.

Commercial sectional with wicket

Commercial sectional doors can also be supplied with a wicket door, so staff can come and go without opening a large door to the weather.

Threshold

A wicket door in a sectional door has a threshold at the bottom to step over. Low-threshold designs are available on some doors, which helps with bikes and mowers.

Locks and security

The pedestrian door has its own lock. On electric doors, a safety contact stops the main door from moving while the wicket is open.

Automation

The main door can still be electric with a remote, while the pedestrian door is opened by key or handle for everyday access.

Sectional garage door on a house

Who it suits

A pedestrian door makes most sense when the garage is used as more than a car port: a workshop, home gym, utility space, bike store or garden store. Walking in through a small door keeps the heat in, keeps the weather out and saves wear on the main door and its motor.

It also helps if the car is parked close to the garage door on the driveway, as you can get into the garage without moving the car to open the main door.

Wicket door or side door?

An integrated wicket door is the neater choice when there is no room for a separate door in the wall, or you want one opening on the front of the house. It is built into a sectional garage door, which lifts vertically into the roof space, so it suits openings with enough headroom for tracks.

A separate side door avoids a threshold in the main door and gives a full-height, step-free way in. It needs a suitable wall and space for the door to open, and may involve building work to form the opening.

At the survey we look at the opening width, headroom, the side walls and how you use the garage, and explain which option will work best.

Commercial premises

For workshops, units and warehouses, a wicket door in a commercial sectional door lets staff come and go while the main door stays shut, which helps with heating and security. Our guide to commercial sectional doors covers wicket doors, vision panels and electric operation in more detail.

Pedestrian door questions

Can a sectional garage door have a pedestrian door?
Yes. Many sectional garage doors can be made with a pedestrian (wicket) door built into the panels, so you can walk in and out without opening the whole door. Whether it suits your garage depends on the width of the opening and the design of the door, which we check at the survey.
Is a wicket door secure?
A wicket door built into a sectional door has its own lock and is designed so the main door cannot be opened while the wicket is open on electric doors. As with any door, security depends on the quality of the lock and how it is fitted, so it is worth discussing locking options when you order.
Can you add a pedestrian door to an existing garage door?
Usually not. A wicket door is built into the door panels when the door is made, and cutting one into an existing door weakens it. The practical options are a new garage door with an integrated pedestrian door, or a separate pedestrian side door fitted into the garage wall.
